About 400 mountain gorillas live in the fabled Volcanoes National Park, which is shaped by dense forests. It gained international recognition due to Diane Fossey’s well-known book Gorillas in the Fog, which was later adapted for the big screen and starred in an Oscar-worthy performance by Sigourney Weaver.
It was in these forests that Fossey spent twenty long years dedicated to the research and habituation of mountain gorillas and was so dedicated to them that it is partly thanks to his work that these animals, although endangered, are currently kept away from the clutches of poachers.
The park is located along the border with Uganda and the Congo (DRC), with an area of 160 square km and is part of the Virunga Mountain range, which includes up to five different volcanoes. Surely, we are talking about one of the most mythical parks in Africa.
The main reason to visit Rwanda is undoubtedly the tracking of the mountain gorillas in volcanoes since visitors seek to be able to find themselves in front of this powerful and giant animal, although the park is also home to the Golden Monkey, which can also be visited since there are families accustomed to the human presence.
Surely, an encounter with mountain gorillas is one of the most touching and incredible experiences.
